A Dickens of a Christmas 2009
The Spartanburg Herald Journal is the presenting sponsor of the 16th annual A Dickens of a Christmas. This Victorian Christmas celebration will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in downtown Spartanburg on Dunbar Street facing the Extended Stay building.
The event, organized by the Spartanburg County Historical Association, will feature horse drawn carriage rides, roasted chestnuts, hand bell choirs, ballet dancers, characters from the Charles Dickens novel, living windows, holiday choirs, and the magical Denny’s Tree Lighting Ceremony.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony will get underway at 8:00 p.m. and will include a community sing-along of favorite Christmas songs. The Denny’s tree is being delivered the morning of Monday, November 23 if you would like to get an early peek.
The lobby of the Denny’s building will house a host of children’s activities such as cookie decorating, ornament making, demonstrations of Victorian games, etc. If you have little ones, be sure to stop in so they can participate. Santa will have his sleigh parked in Morgan Square where children can pay a quick visit and have their photos taken…be sure to bring along your cameras!
This year’s Dickens celebration will showcase many new participants…USC Upstate Gospel Choir, Need To Read, and Sisters In Motion to name just a few. Long-time favorites that will return include the Aug W. Smith Shadow Boxes, Spartanburg Ballet dancers, and the Spartanburg Repertory Company.
